1 person dead after train hits crane in Netherlands

THE HAGUE, Netherlands - Dutch emergency services say one person was killed and a number of passengers have been injured after a passenger train slammed into a crane and derailed.

The accident around 9 a.m. (0800 GMT) Tuesday left four carriages of the train lying on their sides on or near the rails.

The local security services say in a tweet that one person is confirmed dead and a number of passengers were wounded. It did not give further details. Local mayor Han Noten told Dutch broadcaster NOS that there were not many passengers on the train.

The accident happened near the town of Dalfsen, some 125 kilometres east of Amsterdam.

Investigators were heading to the scene to establish the cause of the crash.
