OTTAWA -- Finance Minister Bill Morneau is expected to give a better idea today of how much the economic downturn has curbed growth in Canada.
Morneau is holding a town hall meeting at an Ottawa community centre.
A government official says Morneau will reveal updated economic numbers that are normally included in the federal budget.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, says the unusual step is meant to be a way of being more transparent with Canadians about the economic situation.
The source says the figures will show a lot has changed since the federal government released similar figures in November and will give Canadians a better idea of the size of the budget deficit.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has already said his government would not be able to keep his election promise that the deficit for the next budget year would be kept to under $10 billion.
