Four Ontario residents, including a 16-month old baby, were killed in Texas when police say their minivan was involved in a three-vehicle collision.
A call to 911 was placed shortly after 1 a.m. on Friday reporting a wrong-way driver heading southbound on the northbound side of the interstate.
The driver of the Ford Winstar minivan, Heinrich Martens, 30, and passengers Margaretha Wall Hildebrandt, 27, Gerhard Hiebert Peters, 30, and Jacob Wall Hiebert, 16 months, were pronounced dead early Friday morning.
Two young female passengers aged approximately three and six years old survived the collision. The two girls are currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the Dell Children’s hospital in Austin.
The group driving the minivan appeared to be a mother and father with their three children, as well as one other adult male whose relation to the family is unclear.
The collision occurred near mile marker 214 of the IH35 in Kyle, Texas.
The 22-year-old driver of the car was transported to hospital in critical condition.
One other male driver of a Ford F-150 pickup truck was treated at the scene and released.
Police said they will close down the stretch of highway for four hours on Sunday to reconstruct the accident.
There has been no confirmation that alcohol or drugs were involved, according to a press release. The investigation is ongoing.
