Pregnant woman with terminal cancer hopes to meet her son

Breanne Smaaslet says she's hoping for a miracle this Christmas: she wants to live long enough to hold her baby boy, Salvatore, in her arms.

More than 26 weeks pregnant, Smaaslet has been diagnosed with terminal osteosarcoma, or bone cancer. And she's not sure if she'll sure live to meet her unborn child.

"The last time we came into palliative care, roughly three months ago, they gave us days (for her to live)," Smaaslet's aunt, Rose Horan-Pachota, said.

But the 22-year-old is determined to hold on and meet her son, whose name means "saviour."

"I'm feeling okay," she told CTV Vancouver from her hospital bed. "I'm really tired."

Smaaslet was 18 when doctors first told her she had bone cancer. She underwent surgery to remove a tumour from her leg, but the disease persisted.

"Every time I went to the doctor I just went downhill," she said.

As her condition worsened, Smaaslet says she tried to keep her distance from other people.

But then she met Adam Smaaslet, the man who would become her husband.

"Through all the darkness, I met my loving husband, Adam," she said. "Even with no hair and a little fuzz, he still fell in love with me."

Breanne Smaaslet became pregnant and the couple married in September.

But after only a few short months as husband and wife, Adam Smaaslet suddenly passed away.

His wife says they still don't know the cause of death.

"I miss him so much," she said. "He was the love of my life."

Now, Breanne Smaaslet is holding on, hoping she'll live long enough to meet her and Adam's son.

"She wants to keep a part of her and Adam for their families who they're leaving behind," Smaaslet's aunt said.

Doctors say they may be able to pull off a C-section when Smaaslet is 28 weeks into her pregnancy – another week-and-a-half from now.

In the meantime, her aunt has set up an online fundraising page for the family. So far, it's raised more than $7,000 to help Salvatore

"I've always wanted to be a mom," Smaaslet said. ""I can't wait to see him."
