HALIFAX -- The Canadian Space Agency is harnessing satellite technology to monitor and protect endangered North Atlantic right whales in the country's waters. The agency said Tuesday it will lead a $5.3-million project funded by the federal government called smartWhales, which will use satellites to detect the presence of right whales and to predict the animals' movements.

TORONTO -- A new study has found that air purifiers used in elevators and other confined spaces may actually do more harm than good in limiting the spread of COVID-19. While air purifiers could be expected to help reduce transmission, researchers from the University of Nicosia in Cyprus report that air purifiers in compact areas actually increase saliva droplet dispersal of airborne viruses.

A made-in-Canada vaccine to protect against COVID-19 is to begin human clinical trials Tuesday in Toronto, says the biotechnology company that developed the vaccine.
Toronto-based Providence Therapeutics said three doses of its vaccine, called PTX-COVID19-B, will be given to 60 adult volunteers at a clinical trial site in Toronto in the first phase of the trial on Tuesday.
