Top-seeded Eugenie Bouchard upset in Antwerp tourney

Eugenie Bouchard didn't see this coming.

The rising Canadian star on the WTA Tour was shocked by Germany's Mona Barthel 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 on centre court Thursday in her second-round match at the BNP Paribas Fortis Diamond Games in Antwerp, Belgium.

Barthel rallied from a set down against the No.-1 seeded Bouchard, of Westmount, Que., to take the match in one hour, 38 minutes.

"It's always tough to play against Genie," Barthel said after the match. "She plays so well, you really have to play your best."

In a match that saw no aces from either player, Bouchard double faulted nine times and saved only three break points out of a possible 10.

No. 2 seed Angelique Kerber of Germany also suffered the same fate Thursday, losing to Italy's Francesca Schiavone 6-1, 6-1.
