"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" isn't the only J. J. Abrams project getting a debut this week; "Star Trek Beyond," from Abrams's production company Bad Robot, is being treated to its first trailer.
Having directed four "Fast & Furious" films to date, Justin Lin has been brought in to helm this third entry to a rebooted "Star Trek" franchise.
Soundtracked by the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" -- a callback to 2009's "Star Trek" -- this new film presents itself as a high-octane, high-stakes feature with room for a well-timed laugh or three.
In that sense the Paramount project is already reminiscent of Marvel's 2014 hit "Guardians of the Galaxy," and shoots for a similar release window: a general international release beckons the week of July 22, 2016.
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Karl Urban return, alongside Simon Pegg, who also co-wrote the movie, while Idris Elba ("Luther," "Avengers: Age of Ultron") and Sofia Boutella ("Kingsman; The Secret Service") have also been cast.
